Located in the lower, more modern part of Assisi
ASSISI
We didn't spend the night in Assisi, but spent the better part of a day there. It was a very exciting time because Pope Francis was due to visit in a week, and the city was getting ready. We had another great tour which included an explanation of some of the frescoes inside the Basilica. There was an earthquake in the 90's which harmed much of the artwork, so there are great restoration projects going on.
The slide show has a photo of the Basilica Santa Maria degli Angeli. This big church was built around the litle Porziumcola Chapel where St. Francis lived, worked and died. No photos were allowed, so I photographed postcards showing the placement of the tiny chapel, and part of the beautiful artwork on the inside.
